Taylor Quinn Reflection: Landscape of the Sacred 11/28/10

The mask is a metaphor for sacred places and the holy. The mask is never able to contain or consume the holy, yet neither can the holy be known apart from the mask. Theologians and poets both interact with the mask. But they both fall short in grasping the beauty of the mask and the holy. The Theologian only looks at the holy and what is behind the mask. They fail to see the amazing beauty of the mask, which is what one must look through before they can see the holy. The mask points to the holy. The poet only looks at the beauty of the mask and fails to look beyond it. They fail to see the holy and how the mask points to the holy. To fully appreciate the holy and the mask one must be able to see as both the poet and theologian.

I think that I am able to have a good balance of the two. I see that nature and the wilderness point to the Creator. I see that God points to His beauty through His creation. They both equally support and lead to one another.
