Its always funny how we react to sudden changes in environment. We, as humans, tend to grow accustomed to the conditions around us, and when we enter a new environment, well, things can get interesting.
I had been in the hospital for a week. During that time, I was never allowed outside. My body and senses had grown accustomed to the conditions of my surroundings: a sterile, bland place with no bright colors, minimal scents, and minimal sunlight.
When I took my first steps outside, the the experience was almost overwhelming. Air! Fresh, plentiful air, untainted by sanitary chemicals, and pure! And then...flowers! Wonderful flowers! I had seen flowers like these many times, but now the colors seemed so much more brilliant and powerful! And the sun! Even in the dying light of early evening, the sun seemed almost scorching to my eyes, which had not seen direct sunlight in so long. It was all so wonderful, but at the same time it was almost overwhelming: my senses had become much more acute from my bland surroundings and now the stimulus nearly blew me away.
Hospital food, as you may know, is notoriously lackluster, so when my mother took me to Cheeseburger in Paradise, well, let's just say it was better than sex. Maybe.
To think: I had only been there a week! Imagine what my reactions would be like if my stay had been a month, even a year! Would the sensations be even more exiting, or would they become so powerful that they became painful? I can only imagine, and I hope to never find out.
They say "You don't know what you've got till its gone".
Well, I say you don't know what's gone till you get it back.
