Lane's Third Axiom-Evan Shively

Lane's third axiom states that sacred place can be tred upon without being entered. An experience I had directly illustrates this axiom. During the summer of both my sophomore and junior year of high school I worked at Ft. Belvoir military base. I worked for the fuel cell division. My job entailed going to a test warehouse early in the morning and watching and taking data on a fuel cell test unit. The warehouse was surrounded by a woods area that the main door looked out on. It was here that sacred place would reveal itself to me. Early in the morning I would sit outside and watch the fawns explore and feed outside the building. I would not interfere, just sit and watch, I felt not just like I was watching the scene but a part of it as well. During breaks in watching the machine I would explore the woods finding clearings in the wood, discovering new paths. Every day around 1PM another intern would come and replace me. I often wondered if he felt the same sacred connection to the woods. One day I asked him he said he hated it, that there were just to many damn mosquitoes. He tred upon the wilderness but did not enter it like I did.
