Laura Stiles- Applying the Four Axioms to Communitas

We all know by now the four axioms that describe a sacred place. However, I've been finding they can be applied to other things as well. They fit quite nicely with the concept of communitas and can actually help to explain it. The 1st axiom, sacred place is not chosen it choses. Communitas is also this way because it is spontaneous. Though people seek it, they cannot find it. It can only reveal itself. The second axiom states that a sacred place is an ordinary place made extraordinary through ritual. The ritual, in the case of communitas is the liminality one must go through before communitas is formed. The third axiom, that states a sacred place can be tread upon without being entered, applies because other people can enter into a group of people where communitas is present and communicate with them without having been a part of the formation of communitas. The last axiom states a sacred place is both centripetal and centrifugal, local abd universal. tensions also exist in communitas, because people are bonding, not because they are unifying into one, but rather because everyone is given the opportunity to be themselves.
