Image and Pilgrimage - William Pfeiffer

In Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture, Victor and Edith Turner devote a chapter to medieval pilgrimages. They discuss the importance, at that time, that visions and apparitions played in these pilgrimages. In one example, they tell of a widow, Richeldis de Faveraches, whom the Virgin Mary bade to build a house like the one in Nazareth which she had seen Gabriel in. She hired carpenters to build it and when it came time to lay the foundation, the two spots chosen, again from in a vision, it was found to be impossible. Richeldis then prayed again and the next day they found a new site with a foundation of unknown origins already laid.
