In the Turner's novel Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture the theme of rituals are defined. A ritual is defined by the Turners' as a "formal behavior prescribed for occasions not given over to technological routine that have reference to beliefs in mystical beings or powers."

We have seen rituals all throughout the course of the class ULLC 223. For instance, we first learned of rituals when Dr. Redick would tell us stories, accompanied by photos, of his hikes where rocks would be placed in certain piles based upon certain social groups. We would also see rituals present in the movie Cold Fever.
