Rite of Passage - Josh Osteen
Turner talks about rites of passage being talked about originally by Arnold van Gennep. He says that they are transitional rituals accompanying changes of place, state, social position, and age in a culture. I would like to talk about how that is used in today's world. I like to ask myself if there are small trials in our lives as teenage Americans that can be considered rites of passage? Driving. Tests. That is it. We have to take a driving test and that is a very important rite of passage. We must prove ourselves to the "man" or the government in order to be a normal American and be able to drive on the roads as the main form of transportation. We also have to go through 21 years of being alive in order to "seem old enough" to drink alcohol. This is a rite of passage because we have to experience the most energetic part of our lives in order to be able to enjoy a beverage. Rites of passage are everywhere in the modern world around us.
