Pilgrimage # 1 - Rachel Carter

Turner enlightens readers on the concept of flow on page 97. He describes how pilgrimage has more substance than its theology. Pilgrimage consists of flow, which is a holistic sensation when we act with total involvement. By concentrating on a limited stimulus, we are able to use our skills to meet clear demands. It's a mental state in which we are fully immersed into what we are attempting to do.

A modern term for flow would include "in the zone," where there's a loss of feeling of self-conscientiousness, because we're so focused. By becoming fully involved, we find that there is direct and immediate feedback and that the experience is intrinsically rewarding. In thinking of multiple examples within the context of my daily life, Turner could not be more spot on. In fact, I can apply something as insignificant as singing in the shower. I completely lose my sense of time as I belt out song lyrics. Even this is an illustration of flow because I find myself rewarded with happiness because I exerted the energy to embody songs on the radio. Undoubtedly, the utilization of flow to accomplish something is rewarding and productive.
