Roland Chandler: Image and Pilgrimage: Release from the Mundane

A key purpose of pilgrimage is the escape from the mundane with a purpose of finding renewal. The fifth pillar of Islam, the Haaj, includes a voyage to Mecca that all Muslims are strongly recommended to take in their lifetime. On this voyage, they are required to wear simple garments, shave their heads, and not bathe so that they may cast off the distractions of the body and fully take in the experience of the holy found in Mecca. This helps Muslims to reconnect with their spirituality and to be surrounded by others with the same goals doing the same thing. Journeys help us all to discover who we are because when we take ourselves outside the context of our community, we see what really sticks with our hearts and minds.
