Turner's book attempts to cover two main points: first the practice of pilgrimage and how it is born, and second the symbols that make up the actual pilgrimage.

These to interplay in a very profound way, keeping the action rooted in tradition but also allowing the individual pilgrim to have their own interactions with the sacred place. I feel like us as humans respond to symbolism. We enjoy having the dual meanings and multiple layers. This is why the pilgrimage has stayed alive today. It can have multiple layers. Dr. Redick talked about the various people who each had different reasons for the pilgrimage, and this is part of that. All of the different aspects of the pilgrimage can mean one thing to one person, and an entirely different thing to someone else.
