Defining Sacred Place-Nayra Guevara

Lane defines sacred place in first part, entitled Place in American Religious Life. Within this definition, he sets the stage for the rest of the book. He describes it as a place that “constitutes a break in the homogeneity of space, symbolized by an opening by which passage from one cosmic region to another is made possible.” At first, I found this concept somewhat confusing. How can a “break in the homogeneity of space” be possible? I have realized that it is something that cannot be seen or even clearly explained. It is something that can only be fully understood when directly experienced. Lane does a satisfactory job in attempting to explain sacred place. However, I believe that one needs to have a personal encounter with a sacred place in order to fully grasp it.
