Erin King- Image and Pilgramage in Christian Culture

Most people can probably say that they have experienced a time in thier life when they are so completely focused that everything else seems to disapear. This idea/feeling is discussed as flow in Turner's book. Flow is when someone is completely submerged in what they are doing. When on a spiritual journey, flow is a common occurrence, and the time in which revelations occur. Flow applies to spiritual journey for many reasons, some of which are because when in the state of flow, time does not seem to exist. A person is removed from the everyday control of ticking hands, and is free to experience life without the restriction of deadlines and hours. Another reason flow applies to spiritual journey is because during flow there is direct and immediate feedback. A person that is "in the zone" has the ability for a response and also feedback on there action. Flow allows the person to continue to groove in the spiritual setting by learning reactions and understanding new things while the state of flow. Flow also allows for the merging of actions and awareness. A person is functioning so well and smoothly that actions and thoughts blend into one movement. Another aspect of flow is that a person is so active in the moment that sometimes there is no thought needed at all because so focused. Flow allows for the non stop turning of gears in the mind. This allows for and aids in the spiritual journey. I have experienced this feeling when I am doing something and I feel so "in the groove" that time doesn't seem to exist. This feeling of my brain functioning so well and my body moving in sync creates happiness.
