"I have come here myself for two days of rest and prayer, looking out onto a scene that I frame according to my own particular needs....Consciously exlcuded from my view are the water tank and supply sheds behind the old hotel down below. I ignore the trucks full of oil and lumber, slipping into lower gear as they head up Highway 285 toward Tao." pg 239
I think this quote reveals a simple truth about humanity: we only see what we want. At this point, the author was tired and needed relaxation. So, when he looked out on the landscape he chose to see a place of healing and meditation, not a place that was filled with things that reminded him of his stress. In the study of sacred place, this is a very important part because it is that very focused views that lead towards the spiritual experience. If the individual was to focus on everything at once, he would not be able to find God in the place. Instead, like Lane, one must find the peace of the place and let himself be found by God in it.
