Morgan Creekmore- Liminality
Reading Turner's book, liminality seems a little complicated. When I read that it's likened to "being in the womb" the first thing I thought of was Dr. Redick shooting out of the waterfall in Hawaii and yelling that he was "born again!". This makes me think of reincarnation, sort of like that time between your past life and your new life, when you are recycled into a new womb and have nothing of your old life or your new life yet. I also understand that it's being "betwixt and between" as a part of a rite of passage. Liminality is that point on the Appalachian Trail when you've left aside your structured community identity but haven't flowed into the communitas yet. I can relate to this idea thinking about my first days at any summer camp. Everyone is unsure how to act or who to be and very self-conscious, but after a week everyone has their own place in the group and if it is a good camp everyone is super close to one another like the communitas on the trail. So, I think liminality can have a more broad, universal meaning like a point in reincarnation as well as a more personal experience most everyone has shared at some point in their lives.
