The second Axiom states that sacred place is often an ordinary place that is ritually made extraordinary. One of phenomenon of sacred place is that it can be seen as unexceptional by different periods and cultures. In the Aegean Sea, it is the rocky desolate island of Delos which is holy. The surrounding islands far superior in beauty lack the ritual of Delos, the birthplace of Apollo. It is with this ideal that ordinary places can be chosen as sites of divine blessing.
“Mircea Eliade notes that the most primitive of all scared places known in the history of religions is the archetypal, simple landscape of stones, water, and trees.”
These are the simplest forms of sacred places, yet they can be extremely powerful to individuals through the practice of ritual. Anything can turn into a totem for ritual practice; an idea can be instilled that represents something more powerful than itself. The restrictions of spiritual belief cannot be limited strictly to objects or places. It can go farther than that.
