Taylor Quinn: The Hermeneutical Cycle 12/3/10

The hermeneutical cycle helps to describe how symbols and beliefs change over time. We start with a naive belief and from that belief we develop symbols that are attached to our belief. These symbols have meaning to us. After sometime the meaning of these symbols are questioned. We begin to have criticisms about our belief and the symbols attached to it. When we criticize them we end up shattering them. Then after sometime we assign new symbols to a new belief. Now the cycle has been completed. Starting with a naive belief has become a new belief. This new belief goes through the same process again and again.
When I was a kid I used to think that Christmas was a time where I got gifts. All the things and symbols I attached to Christmas all revolved around me getting stuff. Then as I got older I began to question that belief. I then got rid of that old belief and adopted a new belief about Christmas. I see it as a time where I got to give to others and to be close to my family as we celebrate in receive the ultimate gift. The gift of Christ coming to us as a child.
