Society - Wynn Prusaczyk
Eddie Vedder’s music from the soundtrack for Into the Wild is probably one of the most beautiful one’s I’ve listened to. The song Society really stuck out to me. Especially one part of the song “There's those thinking, more-or-less, less is more, But if less is more, how you keeping score?, Means for every point you make, your level drops, Kinda like you're starting from the top, You can't do that...”. It has to do with people who are so obsessed with material goods, but then there are those few who aren’t; they believe that the less you have materially the more you will have in your spiritual or emotional life. But looking at the lyrics of the song you can see that it doesn’t work like that; giving things up means your “level” drops, but you can’t start at the top. This is why he says he doesn’t fit into society; “Society, you're a crazy breed, Hope you're not lonely without me...”. This to me has to do with a state of liminality. In this state you lose your worldly identity, and are stripped to the core of who you are. In this stage society will often reject you because you are not going by its materialistic standards.
