Daniel DeWyngaert - Outside Reading 1
This blog entry I am choosing to write about an article I read describing the local culture in the Hawaiian volcanic region. I read about the volcano at Kilauea first. Both the myth and the history of this area of simply fantastic. The settlers that the current indigenous culture came from Tahiti. They traveled a great distance to these islands, which in itself was an amazing feat. Also, they discovered a sacred site for their culture. The volcano Kilauea is now very special to this culture because according to myth the fire goddess Pele resides in that mountain. The history of the area is so rich with tales of how Pele protects the region, and why barely any one inhabits the area near Pele's sacred ground. Normal life is too mundane, so many people originally lived on the shores of Kilauea.
