My bike is a bike like no other. Others would say it is “uniquely adorable” and some would say “obnoxious,” but to me it is the greatest bike ever created! After bringing this bike to campus for the first time, I have decided that once you go bike, you don’t go back! Transportation around campus has never been faster! Anyways, I have recently discovered that this mystery plank of wood located behind the seat doubles as…another seat! After acting as the newest taxi service on CNU’s campus, I decided to see where else this bike with monster truck tires could lead me. My boyfriend as my passenger, one night we ventured through mazes of neighborhoods, streetlights, and manicured lawns to find a hidden, open field amidst the suburbia. As we encroached upon this random piece of land, I couldn’t help but envision a sole lobbyist fighting to save this one piece of land from being developed. Abandoning bike, we (clichély) ran through the field and stopped to lay amongst the wild flowers and grass.
To our society, uncut grass seems so out of ordinary and so unkempt. Whoever thought of cutting grass in the first place must have been really bored one day to go through all the trouble of making this harmless plant so structured. We listened to the night whistles, and I felt the moist dew form on my arms and face. Looking up at the barely visible stars, time seemed to slow down and calmness swept over. This idea of structure kept dissenting with the setting I was experiencing. I realized finally that this secret field was not the product of structure (minus the gated borders) the nature within its confines was free to grow and explore as far as stems and roots would take them. I felt a similarity between this wild vegetation and myself in the resonating unique spirit that it and I possess within structure, the free to grow nature within the fence, and my untamed spirit within the community of CNU. As my boyfriend and I rode back, I thought of the serenity that this place doused all of my senses with, and thanked my bike for allowing me to venture there.
