Dr. Redick has told many stories this semester of all of his encounters with those hiking along the Appalachian Trail as well as many other wilderness journeys and the people that he comes into contact with always seem to be the nicest of people. I can recall a story from Dr. Redick about a man who accompanied his entire class to a dinner and ended up paying for the entire bill. Wow! I did my research on Trail Magic and I have to say that through the research I was able to conduct, that is a very generous act of magic! This made me want to learn of the importance of generosity and I read books about the topic to help me with my research. One of the books I read was titled, The Power of Kindness; The Unexpected Benefits of Leading a Compassionate Life.
In the book, The Power of Kindness: The Unexpected Benefits of Leading a Compassionate Life, author Piero Ferrucci goes forward to explain how in today's world people have gotten caught up and lost in all the new technological advances and have forgotten what true compassion is. Now a day even communication has gotten lost due to our texting or emailing-nothing is personal anymore. Ferrucci shares how to truly be compassionate and how generosity is the best gift you can give someone. As Ferrucci said, "It is a simple but profound concept." I have tied this book into my project of Trail Magic and how random acts of kindness bring us back to what is most important in life and teaches us appreciation for peoples' actions around us.
