My boyfriend, Kyle Ponce, is a brother in the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity here at Christopher Newport University. They had a semi-formal dance back at the start of November and I got to single handily witness their "communitas".
The brothers are extremely close in this fraternity and their love for one another is very apparent in their everyday interaction with one another. They treat all brothers with the same equal-ness and never leave a brother behind. This past October Kyle had cut his hand very severely when using a weed-eater and his brothers were there for him every step of the way, making sure he got a ride to all of his doctor appointments, bringing his class materials. They were always there for him. And at Semi-Formal a slide show was presented of each individual brother naming each one for an interesting superlative. Kyle's of course was "Best Lawn Service Guy". It was a good laugh. But the thing that stuck out the most that night, was at the end of every large SigEp event, the song Country Roads is played and all brothers join in, arms crossed on each others shoulders and sing together. It is a really nice way to show "brotherly communitas".
