A book that I am reading called “This is your Brain on Music” talks about the ideas and concept of music in a scientific sense. One particular section I found interesting was a section involving musical improvisation and what goes on in the brain while doing so. According to tests performed involving musical improvising while under an MRI, the prefrontal cortex of our brain, which monitors our behavior and performance, shuts down while improvising. The scientists further conclude that this can most likely be attributed to many other forms of artistic output as well.
While reading this I couldn’t help but make the connection to the idea of flow that Turner brings up in “Images and Pilgrimage in Christian culture.” The state of mind that improvisers are entering into when they improvise is this idea of being in this “holistic sensation when we act with total involvement” known as “flow” (Turner 137).
