Erin King- Outside Reading

For an outside reading, I chose the article Ecology, Justice, and Compassion by Unitarian Universalist minister Fred Small. In this perspective, he starts by quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., ""We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny." He analyzes this by stating, "Dr. King understood the essence of ecology: we belong to each other. Today, people of faith around the world are coming to understand that threats to the environment are threats to the principles of justice and compassion at the core of every religion." He continues to discuss the importance of the natural world, and the important role it plays in the interdependence web that exists on earth. He preaches conservation, and also how most every religion values things found in nature. I really liked this article. Not only because it spoke of the importance of nature, but also because of the different perspectives used to show the importance of preserving the natural world. Green energy and conservation movements are necessary now more than ever. Not only in the United States, but around the globe, because as Dr. King Jr. said, we are all tied in a single garment of destiny.
