great expectations- Chris Modlin

response to "Image and Pilgrimage"
We have seen the idea of pilgrimage as liminal, and we have talked about people being changed by a journey. But I feel like expecting this type of thing to happen can interfere with it happening. In other words, expecting to be changed by a journey can effect what change actually occurs. From my experience, going into something with expectations of spiritual change usually hinders it. I noticed this when I would go on lots of "Retreats" or "Quiet times" with Christians. I expected so much that I wasn't truly open. I feel like the most changing experiences happen when you don't expect them to (Just look at Hirata from Cold Fever).
I could also see it working the other way: that expectation can have a placebo effect. If you expect things, your imagination can project them. This is how I felt when I learned about Native American "Vision Quests".
