I believe the Ise Grand Shrine serves as a pure symbol for the Shinto religion. No one, save the high priest, has ever seen the inside of the shrine, or even the front door, yet the Shinto holds it as one of the most sacred and prominent shrines in their belief. As I have stated, I love the mystery that surrounds it, but more than intrigue attracts people involved in that religion; they respect it and essentially worship it. Despite only seeing the tops of the roof, these people believe the building is truly special and “is a factor influencing social action, associated with collective ends and means, whether explicitly formulated or not” (Turner, & Turner, pg 245). I want visit the shrine and come up with my own reason for what attracts them, and then talk to a Shinto member, hear their feelings on the shrine, and then see if our answers correspond. What a fascinating building!
