Recently I embarked on a journey from Richmond to Newport News travelled on longboards. I did this with a few friends. On the trip we experienced a feeling of liminality due to the strangeness of riding a piece of wood over 100 miles down roads usually travelled by cars. This liminial state ushered in communitas. On the trip we felt as one travelling. If one dropped behind the rest of us would slow down as to not get too far ahead and potentially lose a member of the group. I felt as though the well-being of the group took precedence over my own desires. This is something that really interested me because we had talked about the idea of communitas many times in class and I was actually experiencing it in real life.
