Rachel Hrovat~Sense of Flow

One concept that Turner talks about in his book is “flow”. This is defined as “the holistic sensation when we act with total involvement” (p.137). This idea can be experienced when people are on pilgrimages. Along with the comunitas, people’s minds are primarily focused on being in the now, and taking each step for granted. People want to partake in challenging experiences in order to have to give all of themselves in order to complete the task. But there has to be a balance as well. If one does not possess the ability to walk the 2,000 plus miles of the Appalachian Trail, then it is not wise for them to try and complete that challenge at first. However, if one was to train slowly and work up to gaining that ability, than that is one way that he could eventually get to experience “flow” and in a way is experiencing it even as he trains because he is putting his all into it so that he can one day finish the trail.
