I read a story online today about an older couple that hiked the Appalachian Trail in its entirety. The short article was about their preparation, motivation, and general mindset towards making the trek in their advanced age. I was so impressed by their dedication to the task! Although only 10-25% of hikers actually complete the entire Trail, Randy and Georgia knew exactly what they wanted. They trained for five years, physically and mentally, in order to make sure their bodies were fit for the challenge. Georgia documented the journey with photos, and later assembled them into a beautiful DVD that takes the viewer on the Appalachian Trail. They have collectively written books on spiritual matters, predominately Christianity, but also other books based on relationships. One such book – titled Solemates: Lessons on Life, Love, and Marriage on the Appalachian Trail – truly interested me. With the declining sacredness of marriage, I was intrigued to see a couple finding a unique way to grow together physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I have always looked up to the way my own parents have handled their marriage throughout the years, which is perhaps why I appreciate this lasting love story so much.
