When I think of nature areas that hold special meaning to me, the first place that comes to mind is the small woods around my house. Growing up this woods provided me everything, a place to explore, to play pretend, to hang out with friends, to relax and to dream. My friends and I growing up would spend hours in this woods making up games and dreaming up pretend scenarios. When I went back for break I couldn’t help but think of the cultural approach when I saw these woods again. Culturally these woods mean so much to me due to the experiences I shared with this wilderness. However, they don’t hold the same meaning for the people living around me. Many of my neighbors have repeatedly cut down the woods trimming it back because it gets in the way for them. The woods for them holds a different cultural meaning it isn’t a place of majesty but an eye sore that gets in the way of their property. This example to me really demonstrates how powerful a perspective on the wilderness can be. For example, national parks are protected due to the importance they hold for the people who petitioned the government. One’s perspective really impacts how you feel towards a wilderness it is what makes it sacred or simply an eye sore.
