When I read Turner's first chapter about pilgrimage, I am amazed that I learned so much about the topic. I am not a master on the topic, but I thought that I at least knew the basics. Turner talks about everything about why pilgrims go on pilgrimages to the four different kinds of pilgrimages. Then in class, Dr. Redick talked about his class trip on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. He showed us all of these pictures and even told us stories about his experiences on the trail. What I have learned about pilgrimages from both the class and Turners book is that, people do it for the religious experiences and also because it is a religious requirement. Pilgrims who decide to make this religious journey are able to make a religious connection to their religious figure and to the other pilgrims. They are then able to make friendly connections with other pilgrims and these friendships carry along with people for the rest of their life. These are just some of the great things that happen on a pilgrimage, and maybe one day I will be able to experience this for myself.
