Wendell Berry, “People can’t change places as rapidly as their bodies can be transported.”
I agree with this quote because after most car rides it takes me a while to gain my bearings after traveling a far distance; and evermore so when I took an international flight from Dulles to Heathrow. This was during the summer of 2007 as part of a student ambassador trip. From sitting in the middle section of the plane to rushing through the airport with a set agenda it took a while to soak it all in. looking back it feels like I was just going through the motions, not entirely enjoying it as much as if I had been the one to plan it and do things on my time. I also feel that this quote goes along with Lane’s axiom that sacred place is not chosen, it chooses. Using the story from his book of the man searching for signs of god in the wilderness as an example; It was not until the late hours of the day when he gave up searching that he was able to find a patch that appeared sacred to him. He had passed this patch many times before, yet god chose to reveal himself then at that time. Perhaps traveling through the wild for so long was a result of him entering into the wilderness too fast, thinking he could quickly find a sign of the sacred with ease so quickly was a false assumption.
