Will Geiger-Sacred Landscape
The myth of the founding of Yellowstone National Park or the Campfire Story is a good example of the tension between space and place. When the group of explorers went on an excursion out into the wild that was the pre-designated Yellowstone. Other natural wonders like Niagra Falls, in that time, were huge sources of tourist revenue. When this idea was presented to the group of explorers, one of them originated the idea of land belonging to the people. This could be seen as the origination of the distinction between space and place. Once one realizes the value of a place on a level beyond simple resource exploitation, he can make the difference between space and place.
