I read this book as a part of my research for the semester project. This is an amazing personal account of one man who found himself trapped beneath a colossal slab of rock that broke off Mount Bowen on Hinchinbrook Island in Australia. For two days he suffered underneath the rock while his partner searched for help. Macdonald experienced conflicting emotions about giving up but persevered through his spirit and his obstinacy. This narrative of the whole event in first-person is emotionally moving because it told of his double above the knee amputation. Despite everything that Warren MacDonald went through, he still travels back to place and instigates climbs, as well as motivationally speaks. I think that the place must have had a profound effect on him, because while I was reading I was constantly thinking of what would I do in that situation. One would definitely NOT be going back to place! I think in every way I compared myself to him, I chose the opposite of what he did. But as I contended in my paper, hardships can encourage a spiritual experience, so maybe the circumstances would be different if I was in the same situation!
