When trying to relate our paper on the film Cold Fever to a passage from Lane’s book, Landscapes of the Sacred, the first that comes to mind is the introduction and explanation of the first axiom. The axiom states, “sacred place is not chosen, it chooses”, which is what the Japanese salesman discovered during his trip to Iceland. The salesman did not want to fly to this distant country to properly honor his parents with a funeral ritual and had even declined his grandfathers passionate pleading. Nonetheless, he eventually decided to make the trip, albeit somewhat reluctantly. Upon arriving in Iceland, his already intense dislike grew even more after experiencing a series of unfortunate events that caused his already long trip to become even longer. However, when he reached his final destination and performed the funeral ritual that gave his parents a peaceful rest, he realized the sacredness of not only the ritual grounds, but of the entire setting he trekked during his travel. If at any point the Japanese salesman was wondering why he had traveled so far through the harsh landscape, Lane’s immediately relating answer would be “God chooses to reveal himself only where He wills” (pg 19).
