The communitas mentioned in my last post did not end with our walk to the class. Although Dr. Redick only led us on the trail for about 20 minutes, the adventure was not over. We were released to walk on the trail on our own to gain our own experience, specifically so we could have material to blog about. However, I got so much more out of this than I expected. The same 4 friends who got lost with me on the way to the trail stuck together as we walked further down the trail with Dr. Redick himself. After sharing several pieces of information with us, we all stopped at a long bridge over the lake where we noticed turtles, fish, and heron. It was a very peaceful place that I enjoyed simply reflecting on all the big and small things going on in my life while I stared at my own reflection in the lake. Both meanings of reflection were important to me. After a short time of reflection, we left the long bridge and continued on the path, thus beginning the excitement with the good doctor. Dr. Redick was so much fun to just walk with and listen to as he shared stories of his interesting life. The most impacting part was when we reached a shorter bridge that was just asking to be jumped over in one bound. Although he was wearing sandals and glasses, Dr. Redick gave into our pressure and attempted to jump the bridge. He looked excited and a little apprehensive about taking the jump, and as his landed on the other side and his glasses fell to the ground, he might have even regretted it. Well, at least for a second. He landed and let out a great laugh that the class has come to love, and we knew he had fun. It was a great bonding experience with someone who we all appreciate and admire. His insight and experience is something that was awesome to encounter on a personal level.
