Communitas - Wynn Prusaczyk

Communitas is a liminal phenomenon. It does not give people identities, it frees people from them. Communitas will leave people with a feeling of endless power because in this state they are free from their previous status and identity in the world. Communitas bonding will most likely be one of the strongest bonds experienced because it goes into who the person is at a bare level. If these people can accept you for who you are when you seemingly have no status or money, it goes to the person you are at a simple level. There is a song by The Hold Steady, part of the chorus goes “guys go for looks, girls go for status”. I’ve thought about this before and it seems to hold true. Girls and guys will date someone they don’t even like for status or because they are pretty. People will put up with lots of crap because they think it is helping their social status. In the communitas sort of bonding people will have to look past all that.
