More music! I was listening to a song by Lamb of God today called “Descending” and a certain line caught my ear (can I say that?). Now, usually, Lamb of God’s growling vocalist Randy Blithe is not known for his lyrical prowess, mostly writing about things like pain, power, struggle, hate, you know, basic metal topics. But then there are songs about God. As you could have guessed, despite their name, Lamb of God is not a religious band. In fact, you might suppose the opposite after hearing their guitar riffs (they’re from hell). But in “Descending”, Blithe says something that I thought was so intriguing. Something about God so interesting that, regardless of my 15 years in Christianity, I had never thought of. The line reads: “This God that I worship / This demon I blame / Conspire as one, exactly the same, they’re exactly the same” MIND. BLOWN. What Blithe is suggesting is that God created the devil with a specific purpose: to scare us into following Him. Could God do that? He knows everything, wouldn’t He have known that Lucifer was going to fall from heaven? Are the devil and God now conspiring together in order to get us to turn to Christianity? I ultimately decided that I was undecided with an inclination to the contrary. I don’t think God would do that, and I do believe that the devil is a truly evil entity. But still, it’s incredibly interesting to think about.
