In Archie Green’s article entitled, “Hear These Beautiful Sacred Collections,” he focuses on the strong connection between the wilderness and music. He specifically analyzes a couple of composers of American folk music, mainly George Pullen Jackson. His folk compositions reflected the sacred landscape as well as the various social issues of the time, mainly segregation. Green also discusses the difficulty that traditional folk music faces towards the music industry. Such religious pieces are not popular among mainstream listeners. However, it retains its sacred meaning nonetheless. Green goes on to say that the mainstream music industries as well as Broadway have altered the folk genre under a country/ hillbilly label. I believe Green could have elaborated on Jackson’s folk compositions. He could have provided the reader with more reasons of what led Jackson to compose music based on sacred locations.
