Jacqueline Thornley: Lane Reflection
One of the topics we’ve talked a lot about in class is actually one of Lane’s axioms, that is, sacred space is ordinary space made ritually sacred. Now I’m not sure if Lane meant this axiom to be more personal or all encompassing, but every time I think about the axiom, I think of how it relates to my personal life. When I was growing up we had this old swing on the back porch and every day during the summer, at the same time I would sit on the porch swing with my mother and watch the sunset. We would talk about our days, dreams, stories, etc. and that was always my happiest time of the day. Now to anyone else that spot would just be a pretty spot with an old swing, nothing to it. But to me, that swing on that porch was sacred. Through our daily summer ritual we had made it sacred and even if my interpretation wasn’t exactly Lane’s interpretation, that precious little memory always seems to come to mind.
