The Lough Derg PIlgrimage - Stephen Mason
Turner in the book "Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture" talks about the Lough Derg pilgrimage and how the pilgrimage has been shortened from its original length. Modern day pilgrims have to only stay on the pilgrimage for three days instead of the original six days and have to do certain rituals while on the pilgrimage in a different fashion because of modern day differences. After reading this I thought that it was strange that they would change so many things about the pilgrimage in order to make it more modern. I personally wonder if the impact of the ritual on the individual is affected because of this change in the way the ritual is performed? Does one truly practice the ritual and get the full effect that the people in the past got from the ritual by performing this shortened version?
