11/20/10
Our class trip to the Nolan Trail was my first time visiting the well-known path. I was looking forward to the experience for many reasons, such as being outside, visiting with friends, and hearing new Kip Redick stories. Class started at 4:00 so me and a group of 4 friends left at 3:20 just to make sure we were there on time. Unfortunately after walking for about 10 minutes, we realized no one knew exactly where the trail was. Several people had a vague idea of the direction we were supposed to be walking, but really, they were just guessing. As 4:00 rolled around and the Noland Trail was still not in sight, we started to get worried that the class would leave the meeting spot and start hiking the path. However, we started joking about running to catch up with the group and causing a scene, like something out of a dramatic movie. Before long, everyone was laughing again and having a great time. Although it was 4:10 and we still were not close to the path, smiles were on every face as we were simply enjoying each other’s company. This is what I believe is true communitas. Despite being very late to an important meeting spot as well as being somewhat lost, everyone was making the best of it. In a short 20 minutes we went from worrying about catching the class to running to catch up with the group and causing a scene, like something out of a dramatic movie.
