Outside Reading 2- Amber Matkowski
My second outside reading was an article called "The Power of Nature, Seen Through a Bus Window". The author, Scott Nesbitt, was on a trip in Japan. The first few days were disappointing, as bad had spoiled his plans. As he got on a bus to travel north however, he found himself captivated by the wilderness of Japan. He had heard that the Japanese were having a "battle" with the environment, however he could see none of this problem here. There with large areas filled with trees, split up by fields or rocks. As he watched out the window of the bus, Nesbitt experience flow as he said he lost track of time and had no other thoughts but watching what passed. As the bus approached Mt. Aso, a volcanic mountain, Nesbitt was overwhelmed by the beauty of the land. He said that he imagined a giant to be drawing on the earth when he say the craters around the volcano. At a rest stop, Nesbitt was taken back by the smell of the volcanic smoke. He was amazed however and declared that he could have stared at Mt. Aso for hours. His final advice was, "Always keep at least one eye on the window." Going to a forgein place with natural beauty is an awakening experience. One must take it all in without time to process as you travel.
