In Turner’s book he talks prominently about pilgrimages and pilgrims. He says how a “pilgrimage is much more than its theology” because there are so many different reasons why people go on them. While some may go for spiritual rejuvenations, others go for aesthetic reasons and for the sense of community experienced or even for the challenge to complete one. Turner also describes a pilgrimage as “a field of social relations and cultural contents of the most diver types” which is so very true. One comes into contact with so many different kinds of people, cultures, and also landscapes. But this is one of the reasons pilgrims begin their journeys—to experience something new, the unknown. There is a mystery out there waiting for them to discover it and this is fascinating to many as they choose their pilgrimage.
