Spenser Burcak- Communitas (12/3/10)

One of the big things that I will take away from this class is the difference between communitas and community. We learned about this a little while back, but it keeps coming up in my everyday life. Communitas is when people live in a tight group and share in each others experiences and grow tight bonds that last forever. Community on the other hand is when people live near each other, but they do not have as good of a relationship as if they were in a communitas living environment. The main example that we learned in class about communitas was that on the Appalachian Trail. It is also mentioned in Turner's book with the idea that pilgrimages experience communitas when they are on a pilgrimage. Everyone there has the some common goal, and from relationships by being around each other for an extended period of time. Do I experience communitas with my roommate and suite-mates at college? There are some of my closest friends, and I think that I will keep in contact with them long after we graduate from college. Communitas allows people to become friends that they would not normally become friends with in their everyday life. This is just another thing that I will take away from this class.
