Spenser Burcak- Reflection of Lane's Four Axioms (November16, 2010)

In the first chapter of Lane's book, he talks about the four axioms of sacred place. The four axioms are sacred place is not chosen, it chooses, sacred place is ordinary place, ritually made extraordinary, sacred place can be tred upon without being entered, and the impulse of sacred place is both centripetal and centrifugal, logical and universal. He describes that using these four axioms is how you can tell if a place is sacred or not. This is just one of the things that I have learned in this class, and probably would not have though about if I did not take the class. Before this class, I thought that a sacred place was a place that had some meaning or is where a certain event happens and you remember it for the rest of your life. Lane's axioms go into a more detailed explanation about what sacred place truly is. During this class, Dr. Redick has shown us numerous examples of sacred place and we have talked about why they are sacred to a particular person or persons. I am happy that we have done this, because I would have never opened myself up to this, and by talking this class I have. I enjoy learning about sacred places all over the world and hope to visit a few in my lifetime.
