Liminality from Turner- Amber Matkowski
Liminality is the state and process of mid-transition in a rite of passage. Turner says that "the liminal state has frequently been likened to death; to being in the womb; to invisibility, darkness, bisexuality, and the wilderness. I think in it interesting to bring up the idea of death when discussing liminality. Being on the verge of death is the highest form of liminality. You are stuck between and have no idea what will come next. It is hard to live in this state as you are not sure that you are going to be alive come tomorrow. It is hard for one who may soon die to plan for the future, for fear that the future will not come. Liminality is overwhelming as one has no control. Since control is lost, people in liminal states tend to turn to a higher power for hope. Braver people who come into a liminal state sometimes do great good in not knowing what is next. Some take this state of not knowing as a message from God and believe that he will know what is to come next for them. If one gives themselves fully to believing that what is meant to happen, will happen, than flow will come into play and potentailly great things can be accomplished if fear is set aside.
