Music rules. Visitors to our suite always seem to comment on the musical talent of each member, and with good reason. All of my suitemates are musically gifted, which is a blessing and a curse for one reason: we all have very different musical tastes. I love hearing everyone’s music come blasting out of his speakers. It gives me a different perspective on music; usually one that I have little to no experience with, and it’s great! Sometimes. Other times, it’s annoying, awful, tasteless, weird, or just bad. I’ve realized that music is the hardest thing to advise someone on, harder than religion. I know more Muslims that have converted to Christianity than I do people who have started liking my favorite band off of a personal suggestion. But that’s beside the point. The point is that we all like our music, and only our music. While there is a slight overlap here and there, everyone is quite different. Whether it’s techno, blues, rap, rock, metal, indie, or any combination of the listed, everyone has a preference. Competing speakers is too much for me to handle, and, quite frankly, my music is always better than yours. Seriously. The fact that I’m complaining is the most interesting part of this to me. While I may hear something and think, “wow, awful”, someone else is hearing exactly the same thing and thinking, “I can’t get enough of this”, which, despite all my complaints, is so awesome. What is in our brain that causes us to love certain music and despise other kinds? Is everyone’s musical preference truly different? It’s amazing to me. Austin, Jordan, Josh, and Roland… you guys complete me. I love my suitemates and I love that they all have a unique musical preference. But I hate it.
