Spenser Burcak- Sacred Places in Sports (11/29/10)

When I was reading Lane's book, there was a passage where he talks about how sports and religion goes together at the University of Notre Dame. I know that this is something that we have not gone over in class, but he brings up a topic that I have a strong passion for. That passion is college football and at Notre Dame, football is just as important as religion. Granted the majority of the world would see this differently, but throughout the world certain sports teams are a religion to people. There stadium then becomes the sacred place, where people go to watch their team play. If one was to go to Yankee Stadium or to Fenway Park, they would be accepted into a sacred place where people dream of watching a game. These stadiums are hollow grounds, and is where some of the all time greats have played. People at Yankee Stadium say that you can feel the spirits of Bade Ruth when you walk around the stadium, hence why they call it the House that Ruth Built. Fans of the Boston Red Sox's even believed in the so called “Curse of Babe Ruth”, who they sold to the New York Yankees. The Notre Dame football team could never have a football game on Sunday, because it would give people a reason to skip church to watch the Irish play. Yes, sports is not a religion, but to some it is pretty close to one.
