Topic of Choice (3)- Jamie Englert

When I first signed up for this class, I was not sure what to expect-if it would be hard or easy, fun or boring, enjoyable or miserable. Looking back however, I can definitely say that I enjoyed the class. Everything we learned regarding sacred space, like Lane’s axioms and the three different approaches, changed my perspective on what sacred space actually is. Sacred space is not just the location of a particular religious monument or religious region. It could be as simple as somewhere in the forest or a spot on a busy, city street.
All the trail journals we read and the videos we saw made me have a new appreciation for hiking and respect for those who thru hike. The whole idea of communitas is so evident in these people’s lives and the value they place on it serves to validate its truth even further. This class also gave me a desire to go on more hikes and up more mountains. We talked a lot about mountains and to experience the power a mountain holds seems so incredible. Their power can be seen in knowing that one slip and you’re falling off the face of it or one wrong wander off the path and you’re lost for hours in the wooded abyss. I never looked at mountains or even just the wilderness in general, with that type of superiority before. This class gave me a new outlook on the wilderness and all it possesses.
