There is a difference between the American flag and a yield sign. Other than the obvious reasons, one is a symbol and the other is a sign. Turner explains the difference in the way that a symbol has multiple means and interpretations. While a sign has a particular meaning an no interpretations. Hence, a yield sign—you must yield no interpretation. While the American flag, it can mean multiple things to different people—a symbol.
